Description and tasting notes

Consistently one of the highest rated wines in SA. The Syrah 393 is De Trafford’s most awarded wine and the 2018 vintage is Platter 5 Stars. These flagship wines are from the same home vineyard at 393m above sea level. Expect intense blueberry fruit, pepper spice and mineral complexity.

A small family winery at the end of the Upper Blaauwklippen Road in the mountains above Stellenbosch, South Africa. Established in 1992 by architect David Trafford & artist wife Rita with the focus on high end red wines of great intensity & longevity, using minimal intervention production methods.

This specific 393 site lies behind the mountain in spring and winter and is much more exposed mid summer. This means cooler, wetter weather during the growing season and a much warmer drier ripening period. This together with the clay rich, but steep well drained granite based soils, produces a unique powerful wine with high alcohol and yet retains elegance and long, complex flavours that take time to unfold in the glass.
