From Persecution to Purpose: Malik's Journey of Faith and Resilience in the Face of Adversity
ALICT Class of 2011
Malik, born in Djibouti, grew up in a strict Muslim household and memorised the Quran at a young age. A natural leader, he excelled academically and was deeply committed to his faith. However, as a young man, he began questioning his beliefs, searching for answers about life after death. His journey led him to Christianity after conversations with a priest and three Christians.
Converting from Islam brought severe persecution from his family and society, and he had to flee multiple times. Despite the danger, Malik stood firm in his faith, relying on God’s guidance. He secretly shared the Gospel and led discipleship groups, even though some believers were betrayed and killed. He later joined the ALICT programme, which deepened his understanding of servant leadership and helped him connect with other Christians. This family stood with him and supported him through some of the darkest times of his life.
Malik pursued theological studies in Ethiopia and continues to work with groups in Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Kenya, teaching discipleship. He married a Somali woman and they have a son. Malik remains committed to his calling to make disciples, despite the challenges. His faith in God’s protection and the Great Commission keeps him focused on his mission.
